Clean Transportation for All—Now the Real Work Begins

A blue and gray horizontal rule
John Farrell

Leveraging its decades of clean energy research, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is acting swiftly to take bold action on transportation decarbonization efforts that support the Biden administration’s climate and equity priorities. Trailblazing transformational change is what we do.

Central to this transformation, we bake in a core tenet: put people first. We recognize our vehicle technologies are only as successful as how they are used, adopted, and accessed. As we develop technologies to address transportation impacts on carbon emissions, partnering with historically disadvantaged or underserved communities ensures that our solutions are customizable, affordable, and equitable. Because when we focus on building a clean transportation system for all, everyone wins.

Solutions and Strategies

Energy Justice Spotlighted in Transportation Solutions for Communities

NREL takes a people-centric approach to understand mobility choices, looking beyond technology and policy to explore sociological, behavioral, and cultural factors of underserved communities. Also, our research supports equitable strategies for electric vehicle infrastructure.

For rural communities, researchers conduct demonstration projects to bring transportation options to small towns as well as analyze opportunities to electrify aircraft and seacraft.

Clean Transportation Research Drives Decarbonization

NREL demonstrated its commitment to transportation decarbonization through cross-sector fuels and combustion research for reducing vehicle emissions—on land, across oceans, and in the air.

Also, researchers developed new software for analyzing and planning for net-zero-emission locomotives.

NREL partnerships led to advanced air mobility innovation and production of a low- to negative-carbon sustainable aviation fuel.

Strategic Research Partnerships Produce Real-World Impacts

NREL maintained 30 strategic partnerships concentrated at the forefront of sustainable transportation and mobility research. Partners include ExxonMobil, Natural Resources Canada, Cadmus Group, Google Maps, Xcel Energy, Ford Motor Company, Cummins Power Generation, Daimler Truck North America, U.S. Department of Defense, Shell Global, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Los Angeles Clean Incubator, Borg Warner, California Air Resources Board, New Jersey Transit Corp, U.S. Agency for International Development, and Port of Corpus Christi Authority.

Low-Income Community Technical Assistance Targets Clean Energy Action Plans

NREL provided transportation-related technical assistance for the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Communities Local Energy Action Program, which is helping more than 20 low-income, energy-burdened communities across the nation develop clean energy action plans.

Through the program, NREL works to engage nearby DOE Clean Cities coalitions to provide local technical support and guidance for these communities.

NREL Expertise Bolsters White House Supply Chain Priorities, Electric Vehicle Strategies and Deployment

NREL played a leadership role in establishing the new Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, supporting the build-out of a national electric vehicle (EV) charging network.

NREL analyses informed the White House's understanding of the risks and opportunities within the American clean energy supply chain to meet ambitious decarbonization goals.

In response to an executive order, NREL's fuel and vehicle regulations expert provided guidance on converting the federal fleet to EVs and developed a new database on EV battery policies and incentives.

NREL Develops "Swift" High-Performance Computing Solution

To support the unprecedented levels of high-performance computing needed across the DOE Vehicle Technologies Office's national lab and academia R&D portfolio, NREL developed the Swift supercomputer cluster. The cluster annually provides approximately 20 million allocation units for the Vehicle Technologies Office in addition to its share of the 55 million allocation units NREL’s supercomputer already provides.

Initiatives and Consortia

Co-Optimization of Fuels & Engines Initiative

The NREL-supported DOE initiative crossed the finish line, paving the way for a net-zero carbon transportation future.

Institutional Investments

Research Platform Enables High-Power Charging at Scale

NREL continues to expand the capabilities of its Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) research platform, identifying a solution for DC emulation of battery systems up to 7.5 megawatts. The new ARIES battery emulator will be able to mirror behind-the-meter storage systems and simulate EV charging at megawatt scale.

Equipment Investments Provide Platform for New Capabilities

NREL is enhancing its world-class facilities through a combination of internal and DOE investments. This includes an X-ray nanoscale-computed tomography scanner, which allows for the examination of battery materials in real time, and a transient thermal tester and cycler for in situ resistance measurement of a power electronics package.
