Panagiotis "Panos" Datskos provides scientific direction for wind manufacturing and renewable energy resilience research activities. Datskos came to NREL from another national laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), where he was a distinguished scientist and distinguished inventor. In 2018 he was named a fellow of the international society for optics and photonics. His record of research achievement includes 230 publications, 20 issued U.S. patents, two pending patent applications, and R&D programs covering a broad range of science and technologies in nanomanufacturing, nanomaterials, micromechanical systems, and microsensors. In addition to earning seven coveted R&D 100 Awards, he received a 2000 Discover Award for Technological Innovation in 2000, the same year the University of Tennessee-Battelle named him Inventor of the Year for his work developing a small, inexpensive device for detecting land mines.
