Lu joined NREL in 2019 to work on the International Energy Agency Wind Technology Collaboration Programme Task 30 project, Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration, Continued, with Correlation and unCertainty (OC6). His work at NREL is primarily on simulating the response of offshore wind platforms in waves using computational fluid dynamics. Before joining NREL, Lu served as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer on marine hydrodynamics at the University of California Berkeley and worked as an engineering affiliate on the structural design of WindFloat, a semisubmersible offshore wind platform being developed by Principle Power, Inc. based in Emeryville, California. Lu received his Ph.D. degree in mechanical/ocean engineering from University of California Berkeley, and his Ph.D. research includes computational fluid dynamics simulations using the Discrete-Vortex Method and the potential-flow modeling of wave-energy devices.
