Joshua Comden has a Ph.D. in operations research which focused on utilizing uncertain predictions to make real-time decisions; applications include energy systems and cloud computing. Coming from both an applied mathematics and engineering background, he can think from both a theoretical perspective and a practical perspective. He received extra training in decision support with a fellowship during graduate school to learn how to communicate scientific ideas effectively to decision makers. At NREL, Comden is in the Energy System Control and Optimization group working on various projects to design optimal control schemes for distributed energy resources with the goal of making the power grid more resilient.
