Kestrel Student Campaign

Jan. 3, 2024

We are working with EERE on a new effort to engage more students in computing and to amplify how computing is used for EERE work. These goals begin with a Kestrel-focused campaign in January, where undergraduate and graduate students from any U.S. college or university can apply for time on Kestrel for their EERE mission-related research project. Students have until Feb. 12, 2024, to apply, and EERE decisions on allocations will be made by early March. Student time on Kestrel will be granted for the remainder of FY 2024.

Please reach out to faculty, student groups, or students to let them know about this opportunity! We are hoping to reach a diverse mix of students from around the country and could use your help to encourage students to apply so we get a good response to this.

Students can apply using the application form here.

A few more details:

  • Applicant must be a current student at a U.S. college or university and must provide institutional contact information of a faculty member who is advising or supporting their work.
  • This opportunity is only for computer time on Kestrel. No other funding is provided.
  • Applicant does not have to be a U.S. citizen. We will work with the applications that are approved to process their accounts on Kestrel.
  • On the application form, students must provide an EERE mission impact statement. They are asked to choose either a “small” (100k AU) or “large” (400k AU) allocation on Kestrel. They must also choose either a CPU or a GPU request.
