Cybersecurity for a Modern Grid (Text Version)

Below is the text version for the video Cybersecurity for a Modern Grid.

Juan Torres, associate laboratory directory, Energy Systems Integration:
When we're talking about cybersecurity, it's important to to look at things from a systems perspective.

Ultimately, I see things going to more inherently resilient systems with the assumption that bad things are going to happen.

So, how do you design for that kind of a world?

I think NREL is well positioned to work in the area of cybersecurity for a lot of the emerging technologies. We're considered a national expert in a variety of these emerging technologies, like solar and wind and buildings ... electric vehicles, energy storage, hydrogen. Because we have such a deep understanding of all these different technologies, we've got the facilities and the capability, and the people that really understand where the grid is evolving. I think many people are focused on securing today's grid. We're gonna be focused on understanding that but taking that to design the grid of the future—the grid that's going to be more resilient to these things so that we're not in the same position that we are today.
