NOTICE: Eagle External Login Node Changes

Feb. 9, 2024

For the life of Eagle we have attempted to maintain the login nodes so that they maintained their compatibility with the compute nodes to make the cluster a more unified experience for users. However, due to urgent work required by the Department of Energy, on Friday, February 2nd we were required to remove the Eagle external login nodes at eagle.nrel.gov (el4) and eagle-dav.nrel.gov (FastX node ed7) from the internet. Eagle is no longer accessible from these addresses outside of the NREL network.

Moving forward, external (non-NREL) access to Eagle must be through the hd.nrel.gov HPC VPN, or the SSH Gateway. Software downloads and instructions for the VPN can be found on our website at https://www.nrel.gov/hpc/vpn-connection.html. Once connected to the VPN you can continue to use eagle.hpc.nrel.gov and eagle-dav.hpc.nrel.gov to connect to Eagle.

For those who are unable to use the HPC VPN, the SSH Gateway (hpcsh.nrel.gov) is in the process of being rebuilt and returned to service, and is tentatively available for testing. Please expect some temporary instability and downtime while some updates are finalized, including a downtime in the week of February 12th, 2024. We will make a new announcement via email once the SSH Gateway is stabilized and fully in service for regular use.

We are also testing some potential alternatives for external FastX access that we will announce when ready.

Please note that the internal Eagle login nodes remain accessible by NREL employees on the NREL network/VPN and will not be affected by this change.

This change only affects Eagle. Kestrel's external login nodes at kestrel.nrel.gov and kestrel-dav.nrel.gov will remain available.
