Islands and Territories Supported
NREL provides territories and islands with tools and resources to reduce reliance on imported fuels and boost energy system resilience against disruptions.
NREL partners with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other national laboratories to provide support for territories' energy systems and transitions. Activities are supported through an interagency agreement with the Department of the Interior's Office of Insular Affairs as well as by DOE's Grid Deployment Office and Energy Technology Innovation Initiative.
American Samoa faces similar climate and energy resilience challenges as other Pacific islands: geographic remoteness, dependence on imported fuels, and increased vulnerability to natural hazards such as earthquakes, cyclones, and tsunamis. Renewable energy represents a small but growing power system contribution, although American Samoa relies almost entirely on imported fuels.
