NREL worked with Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 2015, conducting a REopt® analysis to assist with the development of a master plan for reducing the university’s carbon footprint by 2040.

NREL developed a customized model of Miami University’s existing and planned energy infrastructure and then used REopt to optimize additional energy resources such as solar photovoltaic (PV), battery storage, thermal energy storage, and ground-source heat pumps. Based on the insights gathered through its analysis, NREL provided Miami with recommendations on technology types and sizes, dispatch strategy, and implementation year to meet progressing carbon reduction goals and anticipated future loads while also reducing energy costs. Miami University is applying the information revealed through NREL’s analysis to inform its 25-year utility master plan.
