NREL and Eaton Evaluate Co-Optimized Performance of Electric Bus Fleets and Distributed Energy Systems

NREL is evaluating strategies to manage electric bus fleets for grid services. Strategies will be studied in three parts: a review of commercial fleet vehicle operating data; an analysis of grid services from electric vehicles; and a hardware-in-the-loop simulation of the control strategies.

The partnership will result in a co-optimization framework for integrating advanced mobility and distributed energy technologies onto the grid. It will provide opportunities for regional transportation and utility partners to optimize their vehicle technologies and provide grid services, such as voltage regulation and additional energy storage capacity.
