Commercial and Industrial Partnerships

NREL works with partners in the manufacturing, chemical, power, and aviation industries to advance efficient energy solutions for products and processes, including buildings and transportation.

Manufacturing

Two people standing over a table, one handling a large object encased in plastic.

NREL partnership projects find the most energy-efficient and high-performing solutions for manufacturing products and processes. Partner with NREL to:

  • Support advanced energy research, invest in energy innovation, and apply standardized energy-efficiency protocols
  • Advance research associated with bio-based materials in textiles and consumer goods as well as end-to-end resource strategies
  • Improve power electronic devices and reliability for stable grid connection of variable loads
  • Optimize manufacturing supply/value chains through detailed cost and sensitivity analyses around all phases of a product's life cycle.

Chemicals

A person holds a digital instrument over objects on a table that holds vials containing different materials.

NREL and its partners improve organizations' energy performance through ongoing carbon conversion and utilization research. Work with NREL to:

  • Advance research in plastics upcycling, bio-based products, and waste valorization
  • Develop a biorefining process to produce aviation fuel compatible with jet engines and capable of supporting energy-efficient flights
  • Develop next-generation energy strategies for traditional energy companies to incorporate alternative energy sources into their systems.

Power

A group of people gather around a power grid.

Partners work with NREL on integrated energy systems, innovations in electricity transmission and distribution, energy load management, and enablers such as storage technologies. Work alongside NREL on:

  • Building and transportation energy systems, including emerging technology assessments for utilities
  • Integrated utility system modeling capabilities to support utilities with efficient electricity strategies.

Aviation

Two people face a glass wall while one draws on it with a marker.

NREL partners with the aviation sector to offer clear pathways to enhance its resilience, efficiency, and mobility. Airports, airlines, oil and gas companies, the power sector, and more are actively supporting the research and development of new technologies to improve the future of flight.

NREL has implemented a comprehensive, coordinated strategy to accelerate aviation energy innovation across synthetic fuels, airport infrastructure, and aircraft propulsion, enabling reliable, cost-effective, and scalable solutions. Learn more about energy solutions for the aviation sector.
