From its unique position as a national lab-based entity with influential industry partners and motivated investors, the IEC has built expansive networks that help bring advanced innovation to market—where it can have real impact.

IEC manages technology incubation programs for Shell and Wells Fargo and partners with industry and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national labs. It also stewards a robust network of more than 150 investors, including the NREL Investor Advisory Board, and convenes a network of more than 60 leading incubators, accelerators, and universities that supports startups and refers them to apply for IEC programs.

Entrepreneurs

The Shell GameChanger AcceleratorTM Powered by NREL and the Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator portfolios include more than 100 companies. Through the Canadian Technology Assistance Program, NREL has provided technical assistance to more than 20 Canadian startups. In addition, IEC convenes entrepreneurs from around the world at its annual Industry Growth Forum, which includes tracks related to various commercialization stages. By encouraging innovation relevant to multiple sectors, IEC broadens its societal and economic impact.

Incubators, Accelerators, and Universities

IEC relies on a nationwide network of Channel Partners to serve as a trusted pipeline into its programs. This select group of more than 60 accelerators, incubators, and university entrepreneurial programs plays a vital role in identifying and referring high-potential startups during program application windows. Channel Partners share IEC's mission to accelerate the market adoption of energy technologies and act as a bridge for innovation to and from NREL.
