Photo of two men facing each in conversation. On the left, the man has brown hair and is wearing clear safety eyeglasses. He is wearing a brown leather jacket and carrying a bundle of white papers in his hand. He is listening to the man on the right, who is speaking intently and gesturing with his hands clasped together. He has short gray and white hair and a closely trimmed white beard. He is wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt. Behind them stands a row of scientific equipment covered in a clear hard plastic case and linked to a computer.

On a recent lab visit by Congressman Ed Perlmutter, NREL research fellow David Ginley demonstrates a new technology that rapidly produces thin-film solar cells — one of two NREL solar technologies honored by R&D magazine.

Solar Innovations Win 'Oscars of Invention'

And the envelope please...NREL has won two R&D 100 awards for photovoltaic innovations. These prizes are considered to be the "Oscars of Invention" because they spotlight the year's most significant new commercial technologies around the world. NREL has won a total of 42 of the awards since they were established 39 years ago. Full story
