Ian Brownstein

XFlow Energy

Brownstein is the co-founder and CEO of XFlow Energy, which is developing a 30-kW wind turbine that produces energy at a levelized cost of energy competitive with utility grid prices, reducing energy costs for rural businesses.

During West Gate, Browstein is conducting structural validation of XFlow's wind turbine design. By leveraging NREL's expertise and facilities for advanced structural testing, the project will help de-risk the certification pathway for XFlow's wind turbine and accelerate its path to market readiness.

Critical Need

Since 2020, the average commercial electricity rate in the U.S. has risen by more than 20%. This creates significant financial pressure for businesses. On-site, distributed energy can reduce this pressure by providing low and stable energy costs independent from market fluctuations.

Potential Impact

XFlow's 30-kW vertical-axis wind turbine provides low-cost, reliable wind energy that is competitive with utility prices. This has the potential to significantly expand the distributed wind market, which has lagged behind alternative distributed energy sources because of historically high costs.

Innovation and Advantages

XFlow's vertical-axis design operates with single degree of freedom, reducing mechanical complexity, capital costs, and maintenance compared with traditional wind turbines. Using a cross-section blade, the unique rotor design can be cost effectively manufactured in the United States. The patented power conversion system leverages mass-produced, certified components to simplify grid integration. Combined with advanced aerodynamic control algorithms, these innovations allow XFlow's turbines to deliver competitive distributed wind energy.
