The energy sector is rapidly evolving in response to market drivers, decarbonization targets, and energy resilience goals. NREL is working to prepare the next generation of energy cybersecurity workers to meet future needs and equip the current workforce with the critical tools and skills necessary to enable a secure clean energy future.

The race to adopt new technologies and understand the threat impact is critical to national and energy security. NREL has decades of experience and expertise in up-and-coming technologies, like distributed energy resources, to effectively prepare the current and future cyber workforce.

Industry Training and Exercises

In collaboration with Mastercard, NREL created an interactive visualization tool for a cyber-defense exercise among six critical infrastructure companies. Using the Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) Cyber Range, NREL can help corporations and utilities better visualize and interpret their cybersecurity data.

Tools

NREL has tools—such as the ARIES Cyber Range and the Distributed Energy Resource Cybersecurity Framework (DER-CF), Distributed Energy Resource Risk Manager (DER-RM), and the Distributed Energy Resource Virtual Emulator (DER-VE)—to support facility owners in evaluating the cybersecurity health of their distributed energy resources and systems.
