[Text on screen: Power electronics convert electricity from one form to another, so it can safely and efficiently be moved from a power plant to power machinery, vehicles, air conditioners, and any other electric technology.]
>>Matt Ringer, Laboratory Program Manager, Advanced Manufacturing, NREL: Why should we care about power electronics? It's this, it looks like a chip, right? Kind of hidden in devices.
It's not as simple as it seems. You can't just take the electrons and run them into the plant. There has to be what I like to think of as a plug, effectively, and the plug is power electronics.
Many of the processes within a chemical, an iron and steel, a cement—any of those production processes.
For power electronics, NREL has a really wide spectrum of solutions. Being able to look at devices across the spectrum to see how they can be discovered and manufactured, made more effective, will inevitably help industry in the longer term.
So, really, as you look at advanced energy, power electronics are everywhere.
These are the devices that hold the real potential for the future.
