The Buildings Upgrade Prize (Buildings UP) provides more than $22 million in cash prizes and technical assistance to support the transformation of existing U.S. buildings into more energy-efficient and clean energy-ready homes, commercial spaces, and communities.

The U.S. has more than 124 million buildings.

They consume 74% of the nation's energy

and account for 35% of our greenhouse gas emissions.

By rapidly and equitably upgrading existing buildings to run on clean energy, we can help address climate change.

This means transitioning to efficient electric equipment, such as heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, and ensuring occupant comfort with measures such as insulation and air sealing.

Working together, we can help reduce carbon emissions and energy costs while improving indoor air quality and occupant comfort.

Through unprecedented funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,

we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to upgrade many types of buildings across the country.

Announcing Buildings UP: The Buildings Upgrade Prize designed to equitably transform residential and commercial buildings across the U.S. through capacity building support.

Teams participating in this prize will develop solutions to address the toughest challenges to building energy efficiency and efficient electrification
