Hydrogen Infrastructure Testing and Research Facility Animation (Text Version)

This is the text version for the Hydrogen Infrastructure Testing and Research Facility animation.

The animation uses moving dots to show how hydrogen flows through the Hydrogen Infrastructure Testing and Research Facility at NREL's Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF).

Green dots representing electricity—from grid or renewable sources—enter the ESIF and are converted to hydrogen via electrolysis in the "Production" area.

Blue dots representing low-pressure hydrogen exit the ESIF and flow into the low-pressure storage tanks in the "Infrastructure" area.

From low-pressure storage, low-pressure hydrogen can flow into ESIF research labs in the "Fuel Cells" area.

Low-pressure hydrogen also can be compressed to high pressure and then stored in high-pressure tanks. High-pressure hydrogen then flows to high-pressure research projects in ESIF or to the "Fueling" area.

In the "Fueling" area, high-pressure hydrogen flows into the hydrogen dispenser for fueling fuel cell electric vehicles and into research equipment for infrastructure research projects.

From the fueling research equipment, low-pressure hydrogen can be recirculated to low-pressure storage.

The "Safety and Analysis" area represents cross-cutting data analytics, safety, and reliability research that supports all the other areas of the animation.

The "Future" area shows where additional high-pressure storage and dispensing capabilities are planned.
