An Energy Transition Made Easy: NREL's Educational Resources for Grid Interconnection (Text Version)

This is the text version of the video An Energy Transition Made Easy: NREL's Educational Resources for Grid Interconnection.

This video explains how NREL's resources can help energy sector professionals navigate IEEE Standard 1547-2018.

Across the United States, we are plugging into new energy sources, modernizing infrastructure and dated technologies, and turning to renewable resources like the sun and wind.

With this transition comes millions of new connections for solar panels, batteries, smart homes, and electric vehicle chargers, and it requires coordinating these devices to safely and reliably interact with the power grid. That means the vendors, regulators, and utilities adopting these new technologies need to work together—and meet baseline requirements like device settings or security standards.

But luckily, there is expert guidance available for navigating this new terrain. IEEE 1547—the gold standard for grid interconnections—simplifies the energy transition with up-to-date directions for connecting any energy device to the local grid. And the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, or NREL, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office, is helping to make that guidance as accessible as possible.

By running power experiments in the lab, NREL has evaluated how millions of more devices can safely be added to the electric grid. NREL has also published information about their lessons learned and created a catalogue of online resources. These educational resources cover all aspects of connecting to the electric system.

Whether used to assist in designing policy for renewable energy integration or updating rules for a distribution system, NREL's work has already helped many states, cities, and utilities to simplify and speed up their conversion to clean energy.

With an eye toward carbon-free electricity by 2035, NREL is fostering the transition that will take us there, enabling us all to connect to a safe, sustainable future.
