Kai Zhu Named Fellow of Materials Research Society

The Materials Research Society has elevated Kai Zhu of the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) to the rank of fellow, placing him among the rare few to be accorded that honor.
Zhu, a senior scientist in the Chemistry and Nanoscience Center at NLR, joined the laboratory in 2004 as a postdoctoral researcher after earning his Ph.D. in physics from Syracuse University. The society noted Zhu was singled out “for sustained and distinguished contributions to materials research in the areas of metal halide perovskites and their application in photovoltaics towards commercialization, and outstanding leadership and service to the broader materials community.”
The Materials Research Society (MRS) chose just 18 fellows for its class of 2026. Zhu and the other fellows will be recognized at the organization’s annual meeting in April. The society, which has more than 18,000 members, has named 390 fellows since the program began in 2008.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this remarkable recognition from MRS,” Zhu said. “This award would not have been possible without the incredible support of my colleagues and collaborators. For the past 12–13 years, we have worked together tirelessly to explore, develop, and understand the hybrid perovskite materials, and I am very grateful for their partnership and dedication.”
Zhu is the fourth person from the National Laboratory of the Rockies to be named an MRS fellow. The others are David Ginley, Suhuai Wei, and Peter Green.
