Geothermal Design Methods, Tools, and Standards

NREL researchers develop robust, open-source protocols and tools capable of simulating a range of geothermal systems, costs, and impacts.

Team members in meeting.
NREL geothermal researchers collaborate with industry, academia, regulators, and other national laboratories to deliver tools and standards that streamline geothermal development.

To facilitate geothermal development, NREL researchers worked with industry partners to develop the Geothermal Resource Portfolio Optimization and Reporting Technique protocol and the Regulatory and Permitting Information Desktop Toolkit. NREL researchers also work with industry to provide technical assistance, validate and verify models, and engage in collaborative research. In addition, we work to standardize reporting to better understand available data and resource potential in the United States.

Geothermal Resource Portfolio Optimization and Reporting Technique System

The Geothermal Resource Portfolio Optimization and Reporting Technique (GeoRePORT) Protocol provides a system for reporting resource grade and project readiness level. It is particularly useful for describing early-stage exploration projects. GeoRePORT can assist in evaluating project risk and return, identifying gaps in reported data, evaluating research and design impacts, and gathering insights on successes and failures. It helps users objectively and quantitatively compare project potential in geological, technical, and socioeconomic areas.

Regulatory and Permitting Information Desktop Toolkit

The Regulatory and Permitting Information Desktop (RAPID) Toolkit helps users understand federal and state regulations necessary to secure project approval. This tool provides access to permitting information, best practices, and reference material at federal and state levels for bulk transmission, geothermal, hydropower, and solar energy installations.
