Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning User Applications and Support Tools

NREL developed general-purpose artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools for various research projects within the lab's mission space.

Many scientific challenges across NREL involve leveraging the power of AI/ML for reduced-order modeling, making predictions, image processing, etc. The field of ML is quickly evolving, making it challenging for scientific researchers to stay updated on the latest cutting-edge tools and deploy them on their domain-specific problems.

NREL's AI User Applications and Support project touches on scientific challenges linked to NREL's mission space and enables the widespread use of AI/ML to accelerate scientific discovery and success throughout the laboratory. ML is currently being used at NREL for a variety of crosscutting applications such as reduced order modeling of fundamental turbulence/chemistry dynamics, molecular dynamics, and power grid operations.
