About the Uniform Methods Project

Through the Uniform Methods Project, the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL maintain a document, first published in 2013, for evaluating, measuring, and verifying savings for these seven energy efficiency measures:

  • Residential Lighting
  • HVAC, Unitary Commercial
  • Commercial Lighting
  • Residential Refrigerator Recycling
  • Residential Whole-House Retrofit
  • Commercial Lighting Controls
  • HVAC, Residential Boilers and Furnaces.

The following cross-cutting protocols were also originally published in 2013:

  • Assessing Persistence and Other Evaluation Issues
  • Metering
  • Peak Demand and Time-Differentiated Energy Savings
  • Sample Design
  • Survey Design and Implementation for Estimating Gross Savings.

In Phase II of the project, the following protocols were published in 2014:

  • Adjustable-Speed Drive Motors
  • Chillers
  • Commercial New Construction
  • Commercial HVAC Controls — Energy Management Systems/Direct Digital Control systems
  • Commercial Retrocommissioning
  • Compressed Air Systems
  • Data Center Efficiency — Servers and Data Storage
  • Estimating Net Savings: Methods and Practice
  • Residential Behavioral Programs.

In Phase III of the project, the following protocols were published in 2017:

  • Combined Heat and Power
  • Strategic Energy Management.

All protocol chapters were evaluated and updated, as needed, in 2017.

More information is available on the DOE Uniform Methods Project website.

Project Outreach and Resources

Here you will find outreach documents and resources, not including draft protocols for the Uniform Methods Project.

  • UMP Reference Language—Examples
This document provides example language for referencing the use of Uniform Methods Project protocols followed by examples of language that is currently in use. By following these examples, readers better understand when and how the protocols are used and ensures consistent citation of relevant Uniform Methods Project protocols.

  • Uniform Methods Project Talking Points
The project team, steering committee, technical advisory groups members, and technical experts will use this document when preparing a presentation or when answering questions about this project. We will also use it as a foundation for creating any additional outreach materials.

  • Presentation to ACEEE Summer Study 2012
Michael Li made this presentation at the ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings in August 2012 in Pacific Grove, California.

  • Uniform Methods Project Organizational Contacts
The organizations listed on this document have been deemed relevant to the success of the Uniform Methods Project. Please send any additional organizations that you think are missing to chuck.kurnik@nrel.gov or alternatively, add them to the "Additional Contacts" tab and return the updated document to the same address. Any professional/personal contacts should be included as well.
