Steve Harvey is a staff scientist in the Interface and Surface Science group at NREL. He performs time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and photoemission measurements to better understand materials fundamentals and degradation in semiconductor, organic, and oxide materials.

Research Interests

Steve's research interests lie in defect chemistry and diffusion of dopants and impurities in oxide and semiconductor materials, surface characterization via photoemission, and, more recently, material and device investigation using multi-scale, multi-technique characterization. His primary focus at NREL since 2015 has been using TOF-SIMS to assist in developing a variety of solar cell materials and has included: studying dopant distribution and diffusion kinetics in CdTe, investigating root-cause mechanisms of degradation in photovoltaic modules, investigating organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells, and probing catalyst distribution in proton-conducting oxides. Prior to NREL, Steve's work focused on defect chemistry, diffusion, and surface characterization of novel oxide materials.
