Michelle Fogarty earned her Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Connecticut and has joined NREL as a postdoctoral researcher in the Water Power group. She is working on tidal energy resource characterization and her first project is to calculate characteristic flow and turbulence statistics from data collected at the Western Passage site near Eastport, Maine. She will also participate in the instrument configuration, fieldwork, and data analysis for the 2020 Cook Inlet data collection campaign in Alaska. Results of both projects will be shared with the community through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. These reports will document relevant flow conditions at potential tidal energy sites and will help device simulation tools to estimate realistic loads on tidal turbines.
