David joined NREL's Water Power Group in 2019 as a mechanical engineering postdoctoral researcher after completing his EngD at the Industrial Doctoral Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy in Edinburgh, UK. As part of his EngD studies, David spent time physical model testing at the University of Strathclyde, making and testing mooring samples at the University of Exeter, and investigating the social and environmental impacts of offshore renewable energy at the Scottish Association for Marine Science. During his EngD, David spent over 3 years as a research engineer in industry with an offshore renewable energy consultancy.
His research focuses on wave energy—predominantly the development of numerical modeling software for wave energy converters and expanding the capabilities of existing software to handle a wider range of mechanical topologies and features—a critical factor in a sector with little design convergence.
