Senior Research Fellow II-Electrical Engineering

Dr. Mark O'Malley is a senior research fellow at NREL and chief scientist of energy systems integration. He is also a professor of electrical engineering at University College Dublin (UCD) and founded the university's Electricity Research Centre, a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, industry supported research activity.

Dr. O'Malley is a world authority on energy systems integration, in particular on the integration of renewable energy technologies.

Dr. O'Malley's research is industry focused and internationally collaborative. He has published over 350 journal and conference papers, primarily on his core research area of electrical power engineering but also extensively in biomedical engineering. He has led interdisciplinary research teams of up to 60 people, with representation from mechanical, civil and chemical engineering, as well as geology, mathematics, economics, business, and social science.

Dr. O'Malley is the co-founder of the European Energy Research Alliance, Joint Programme in Energy Systems Integration, and the founder of the Electricity Research Centre at UCD. He is a foreign member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a member of the Royal Irish Academy, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and has received two Fulbright Fellowships. Dr. O'Malley serves as chair of the Research and Education Working Group within the Energy Systems Integration Group.

He is regularly engaged as a consultant for industry and government, with clients including the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Energy Agency, and the Energy Foundation. He has convened energy systems experts to inform European Union positions on energy system designs.

Dr. O'Malley has supervised 24 Ph.D. students to completion and taught undergraduate and postgraduate level courses for over 25 years in Ireland, China, the United States, and Belgium. Currently on sabbatical from UCD, he served as head of the university's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. More recent teaching interests are centered on the development of a massive open online course on energy systems integration.
