Dave Simms has been the research operations director at the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) at NREL since 2001. In this role, Dave is responsible for safe operation of all NWTC research facilities and capabilities. This includes research validation experiments on megawatt-scale wind turbines, meteorological towers, structural components, dynamometers up to 5 MW, and grid integration using the NWTC’s controllable grid interface and 1-MW/1-MWh battery system. Dave was a researcher and project manager in the NREL Wind Program from 1984 to 2001, which included managing the projects to acquire and install the Controls Advanced Research Turbines at the NWTC and testing the highly instrumented Unsteady Aerodynamics Experiment wind turbine in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Ames wind tunnel. Dave started working at NREL (formerly the Solar Energy Research Institute) in 1979 as a computer programmer and researcher in the Buildings and Solar programs.
