The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has named Tina Herrera as chief human resources officer. Herrera will start with NREL on Jan. 3, 2022.

“Tina brings substantial experience to the laboratory from her extensive career in the national laboratory system, and we are excited to welcome her to NREL’s leadership team,” said NREL Laboratory Director Martin Keller. “Tina’s leadership will play a critical role in guiding our strategy for recruiting, developing, and retaining the workforce we’ll need to accomplish our mission advancing carbon-free electricity and a clean energy future.”

Herrera joins NREL from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where she has served in various human resources management positions. During her tenure at PNNL, Herrera was instrumental in developing a foundational strategy for their diversity and inclusion program, influencing key performance management changes, and developing recommendations for key human resources strategies for PNNL management and operating partners. Herrera was also heavily involved in leading a large-scale culture change initiative and the opening of a human resources solutions center delivery model at PNNL. Prior to that, she spent 10 years in human resources at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

“It takes a diverse, committed workforce to accomplish critical goals towards the transformation of our energy systems here in the United States and around the world,” Herrera said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge and opportunity of positioning NREL to fulfill our mission with the capable talent and inclusive workplace that are necessary to meet those essential objectives for our energy future.”

Herrera holds a bachelor's degree in human resources management from New Mexico State University and a master’s degree in organizational development from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California.

NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for the Energy Department by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
