NREL Partners with MotorWeek to Highlight Alternative Fuel Use

More than 30 million annual television viewers will learn about alternative fuels and vehicles thanks to a partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Maryland Public Television.
The popular PBS program MotorWeek now features “Clean Cities Success Stories,” a bi-weekly segment that educates the public about the benefits of using alternative fuels, advanced vehicles, and other petroleum-reduction technologies and measures.
Success stories profiled on the show include:
- City of Kansas City’s fleet-wide alternative fuel program, which includes more than 200 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and 1,100 diesel vehicles running primarily on 20 percent and 50 percent biodiesel.
- Dallas County Schools, where the fifth largest school bus fleet in the country makes its own biodiesel. In April, the school district unveiled its “Fryer Flyer,” a school bus with twin fuel systems that uses biodiesel.
- Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport’s (DFW) fleet of more than 500 maintenance vehicles, most of which operate on CNG. DFW uses about 1.7 million gallons of CNG per year instead of gasoline or diesel fuel. DFW employees also use hybrid-electric vehicles to get around the 29 square-mile airport.
MotorWeek airs in 94 percent of the Public Broadcasting System’s (PBS) markets nationwide and on cable’s SPEED Channel.
“Education is key to the wide-spread acceptance of alternative transportation technologies,” said Wendy Dafoe, senior project leader at NREL. “We’re excited to partner with MotorWeek because it broadens our reach to car enthusiasts and general consumers — drivers that can really make a difference in the deployment of alternative fuels and vehicles.”

Acting on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Clean Cities initiative, NREL is working with MotorWeek to produce segments that showcase partnerships that have helped companies successfully integrate alternative fuels and advanced vehicles into their daily operations.
NREL is DOE’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for DOE by The Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.
The Clean Cities initiative (www.eere.energy.gov/cleancities) is a government-industry partnership that’s made up of almost 90 coalitions throughout the United States. It is part of DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Program.
MotorWeek (www.mpt.org/motorweek) is a 30-minute program produced by Maryland Public Television. It has an annual viewership of more than 30 million.
