Golden, Colo., July 8, 1999 Discover the power of clean energy at the nation's premier laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research, development and deployment. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will open its doors 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 24 for tours of its research facilities and interactive exhibits at the Visitors Center.
The Open House features Roofus' Solar Neighborhood, an outdoor exhibit NREL built last year for Disney World. The exhibitnow at the Visitors Centertells the story of a family dog named Roofus who makes clean energy part of his daily life and showcases renewable energy and energy efficiency products that consumers can use today.
Children and adults are invited to participate in energy-related activities at NREL's Visitors Center including an animated presentation at Roofus' Solar Neighborhood, a scavenger hunt and the chance to ride a solar powered adult-size tricycle.
Adults interested in exploring NREL's research facilities will have the opportunity to see firsthand how the sun, wind and plant matter can be used to make energy. Tours of the lab will be offered throughout the day.
To get to NREL, take Interstate 70 to exit 263 (Denver West Boulevard). Turn north towards the Denver West Marriot Hotel. At the stop sign, turn left onto Denver West Parkway and continue past the hotel. NREL is on the right.
