Kestrel Delay and Changes to Eagle and Kestrel Allocations

Dec. 21, 2022

Dear HPC Users:

We were recently notified that delivery of the CPU nodes for Kestrel has been delayed by one quarter due to ongoing supply chain disruptions.   As a result of this delay, Kestrel will not be available for use until the start of FY23 Q4 instead of the original plan for Q3 availability.

We know that this will impact work for many of you.  EERE has already been notified and is aware of the potential impact on research milestones.

All Eagle allocations for Q1-Q2 will remain unchanged; allocations on both Kestrel and Eagle for Q3 will be revised to accommodate a later transition to Kestrel. The goal is to give all users their “baseline” request for FY23.   As you may have noticed, most of you received the “max”, or “best possible science”, amount requested due to the expectation of a large increase in resources this year.

We plan to finalize revisions to allocations near the start of Q2 (early January.)  In the interest of transparency, we are sharing this advance notification so you can anticipate upcoming changes and plan accordingly.

We apologize for the impacts on your research and will keep you up-to-date as the situation develops.
