Demonstration of Essential Reliability Services by Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant: Webinar
Presented on April 27, 2017, NREL, California Independent System Operator (CAISO), and First Solar hosted a webinar on the recent study, "Demonstration of Essential Reliability Services by a 300-MW Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant," a first-of-its-kind report. The project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative, demonstrates how advanced power electronics and solar generation at a large, utility-scale PV plant can be controlled and contribute to system-wide reliability.
The webinar was led by Clyde Loutan of CAISO, Mahesh Morjaria of First Solar, and Vahan Gevorgian of NREL and detailed the results of the study as well as the team's pioneering demonstration concept. The team outlined how PV power plants can provide essential reliability services related to different forms of active and reactive power controls, including:
• Plant participation in automatic generation control (AGC)
• Primary frequency control
• Active power ramp rate control
• Voltage regulation and reactive power control.
