NREL, Hewlett-Packard Developed Ultra-Efficient, High-Performance Computing System

Hewlett-Packard (HP) and NREL collaborated to create Peregrinean ultra-efficient high-performance computer that uses warm water for cooling. The cooling process results in hot water coming from the supercomputer, which is captured and used for space heating.

Peregrine's innovative design avoids the need for chillers and allows the heat captured from the supercomputer to provide all the heating needs for the Energy Systems Integration Facility. And there's even enough heat left over to melt snow outside on sidewalks during the winter. During the summer, the unused heat can be rejected via cooling towers.

R&D Magazine recognized NREL and HP with a 2014 R&D 100 Award and Editor's Choice Award for this innovative design.
