NREL Collaborates with Holy Cross Energy To Demonstrate New Control Paradigms and Models for Integration of Grid-Friendly Distributed Energy Resources

A cross-cutting team composed of NREL, Holy Cross Energy, Survalent, and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is studying approaches to integrating grid-friendly distributed energy resources (DERs).

The collaboration will test the benefits of control algorithms as applied to data acquired from Holy Cross Energy's distribution management system.

While most large, investor-owned utilities have already taken actions to modernize their grids to address higher DER penetrations, the associated cost may be prohibitive for small municipal utilities and rural cooperatives. This research will demonstrate control strategies for distribution management of DERs in a way that provides real-time grid services, increases DER hosting capacity, and avoids capital expenditures.
