Hui Wei joined NREL in 2008, and is a Research Scientist in the Biomolecular Sciences Team, the Bioscience Center. His main research interest and current research activities at NREl are focused on (1) the genetic modification of plants to increase their biomas digestibility, (2) the efficient microbial conversion of bimass to biofuels, including biodiesel and other long-chain hydrocarbons, and (3) the plant-microbe interactions.
In 2003, he earned a Ph.D. in Plant and Microbial Physiology from Queen's University in Canada. During his Ph.D. studies, he worked on the metabolism of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, and the ion transport in the bacteria-infected plant cells. He also earned an M.S. in Microbiology from the Central China Agricultural University and a B.S. in Genetics from Wuhan Univeristy.
In accordance with his multi-disciplinary education background, Dr. Wei's research experience also covers both plant and microbial fields. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Iowa State Univesity (2003-2005), where he identified novel genes and proteins involved in plant cold acclimation using functional genomics approaches. He then moved to the National Institute of Health as a Visiting Fellow (2005-2008). His research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Science (1988-1998) focused on the physiology and genetics of plant-microbe interactions and the industrial-scale fermentation of beneficial microorganisms.
As an experienced researcher in microbial and plant sciences, Dr. Wei has authored 36 peer-reviewed publications and is a recipient of a number of awards, including the NICHD/NIH Fellow Award in 2007.
