So much light has been shed on “greening up” the electrical grid. Well, it’s now time to start thinking about putting some renewable gas into the natural gas network.
This lecture will cover the near-term impacts of biomethanation, a biological approach to energy storage that could enable future wind and solar electricity generation projects. The approach uses carbon dioxide and shifts energy seasonably by leveraging the existing natural gas network.
NREL, Southern California Gas Company, and Electrochaea have commissioned and are now operating a first-of-its-kind bioreactor installed at the ESIF. Harrison will share some of the initial data from the bioreactor (operating around 60°C and 18 bar), as well as plans to scale this technology up to a hydrogen-producing electrolysis and biomethanation facility with 50 megawatts of electrical input.
Harrison serves as a strategic research advisor at the ESIF to identify critical capabilities, high-impact projects, and partners for NREL’s Energy Systems Integration directorate. Specifically, he works in the areas of hydrogen, grid fuels, renewable natural gas, and other products for the U.S. Department of Energy. He also manages existing research partnerships and serves as principal investigator on a number of applied and early-stage experimental R&D projects.
