William H. Kindred — Director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Bill Kindred guides the laboratory’s diversity, equity, and inclusion programs to create an inclusive, welcoming, and effective workplace for NREL staff.
Kindred joined NREL as the inaugural diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) officer. He manages the DEI programs and eight employee resource groups and partners with Human Resources (HR) for development, recruiting, and retention.
Prior to NREL, Kindred worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory for 11 years as its first diversity and inclusion officer. While there, he and his team established eight of its nine employee resource groups and worked with its exceptional staff to bring multiple DEI trainings, seminars, and workshops to the laboratory. Additionally, he managed the lab’s diversity recruiting and internal inclusion efforts.
Kindred is a military veteran with significant experience in leadership, management, change management, and organizational change. He is a certified military instructor, trained facilitator, and a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator certified trainer.
He holds two HR certifications—the Society of HR Senior Certified Professional and the Senior Professional in HR from the Human Resources Certification Institute.
Kindred has a master's of business administration from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a master's in HR development from Villanova, and a bachelor's in journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
