Integration Studies and Operational Impacts Capabilities

Using the results from state-of-the-art modeling and analysis, NREL researchers calculate the impact of integrating wind power plant output and the additional needs that wind energy's variable and uncertain operation imposes on the operation of the power system. Researchers characterize the variability of wind power plants to evaluate new methods to reliably integrate wind energy into the bulk power system, and partner with grid operators, the North American Reliability Corporation (NERC), and other reliability organizations and modelers to simulate the power system with varying levels of wind energy penetration. The impact of wind forecast errors on grid operations is also analyzed using advanced stochastic power system models.

NREL's integration studies and operational impacts capabilities include:

  • Regional- and National-Scale Integration Studies Design and Oversight
  • Regional Grid Operational Impact Analysis
  • Mitigation Analysis of Wind Variability and Uncertainty (e.g., balancing authorities, forecasting, and storage)
  • Wind/Hydropower Studies
