Western Wind and Solar Integration Study Webinar Series

February 18, 2010, 2:00 MST

The Western Interstate Energy Board presents a series of high-level briefings on the Western Wind and Solar Integration Study for state and provincial regulatory commissions, energy agencies, policy makers, utility staff and executives, and other interested parties. The briefings will focus on key findings and policy implications on the integration of high levels of variable generation in the Western Interconnection.

The Western Wind and Solar Integration Study (WWSIS) examines the operational impacts of high wind and solar energy penetrations in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council, with a focus on the WestConnect group of transmission providers. The Western Wind and Solar Integration Study uses a combination of grid simulation tools and data analysis techniques to explore key questions about high-penetration impacts of wind and solar on the grid. Please see the Western Wind and Solar Integration Study Web site for more information.

Four Webinars will be held every other week in February and March. The Webinars will have presentations on different aspects of the Western Wind and Solar Integration Study and include time for questions and discussion. The briefings will be delivered by National Renewable Energy Laboratory staff with input from key subcontractors (GE and 3TIER).

This February 18th Webinar will focus on statistical analysis.

  • Geographic diversity
  • Extreme events, how often extreme events occur, when do they occur
  • Sometimes variability helps you and sometimes it hurts you
  • A scenario with 35% renewable energy penetration can have instantaneous penetration that is much higher
