Public Transportation from Airports
Three main airports serve the Washington, D.C. area. The closest is Ronald Reagan National Airport, which is only a 15-minute ride on the Metro system to the L'Enfant Plaza station. These links will give you detailed information about getting to and from the major airports using the Metro system or shuttle bus service.
From Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA)
Metro Subway System
The trip to NREL's Washington, D.C., office from Ronald Reagan National Airport is relatively quick. It takes approximately 15 minutes to reach the offices using the Metro subway system. At the airport, take the yellow line toward Mt. Vernon Square, exiting at the L'Enfant Plaza station. Tips for exiting this station can be found below.
From Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
Metro Subway and Bus System
The Metro bus system is the environmentally friendly and economical way to get to NREL. Dulles Airport is considerably further from downtown Washington, and it will take approximately one hour to reach NREL's office using public transportation. Take the 5A Metro bus ($3.00 exact change one-way fare) to the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station. The bus will drop you off at the Dept. of Transportation entrance on D St., S.W. (near 7th St.), which is a few blocks east of NREL's office in 901 D Street, S.W.
Bus service is offered from Dulles to the Metro, from 5:45 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. on weekdays and from 7:45 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. on weekends and holidays. From the Metro to Dulles, service is offered from 6:15 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. on weekdays and 8:15 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
Washington Flyer Bus
Alternatively, you can take a Washington Flyer bus from Dulles Airport to the West Falls Church Metro Station. Buses run every 30 minutes throughout the day, seven days a week. To purchase a ticket, stop by the Ground Transportation Center located on the ground transportation level at Dulles Airport. See the Washington Flyer Bus Web site for information about fares.
Then, from the West Falls Church metro station, take the orange line to the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station. Tips for exiting this station can be found below.
From Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI)
Metro Bus
Board the B30 Express Metro bus on the lower level of the terminal and take it to the Greenbelt Metro Station. The B30 Express bus runs approximately every 40 minutes. At the Greenbelt Station, take the Green line to the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station.
Tips for Exiting the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station
Exiting the L'Enfant Plaza station can be tricky because there are multiple exits. From all four lines (yellow, green, blue, and orange), when exiting the station use the exit marked L'Enfant Plaza (not the Dept. of Transportation or Maryland Ave. exits).
When traveling on the yellow or green lines, you might need to cross the tracks, depending which direction you are heading. When traveling on the orange and blue lines, you must go up one level to exit through the L'Enfant Plaza exit.
As you exit the Metro station (at the top of the long escalator), make two quick right turns and then exit directly outside. Go down the steps and turn left. At the corner, cross D St., then turn left. Enter 901 D St., S.W., and proceed to the 9th floor. NREL is in Suite 930.
