National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Vehicle Systems Analysis

NREL's Vehicle Systems Analysis Project evaluates advanced vehicle technologies to determine their impact on:

  • Fuel economy
  • Vehicle performance
  • Exhaust emissions
  • Vehicle component cost and market potential.

We use simulation and analysis tools that allow us to evaluate vehicle technologies in the real world—before they're integrated into a vehicle for production. This helps guide vehicle research and development towards the most promising technology pathways.

Our in-house R&D activities focus primarily on overcoming key barriers to achieving technical targets for vehicle technologies outlined by the U.S. Department of Energy, which funds our project. NREL's Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems leads our efforts.
