Safety, Codes, and Standards Projects

NREL's safety, codes, and standards group focuses on building a scientific foundation for the technical requirements of domestic and international safety, codes, and standards regulations.

Alternative vehicles and fuels must comply with codes and standards before they enter the marketplace. These codes and standards unify development requirements and help ensure the safety and performance of new processes and products.

NREL's advanced vehicles and fuels safety, codes, and standards projects include:

Under U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) management, NREL works with key stakeholders—including the auto and energy industries, standards development organizations, and other national laboratories—to implement DOE's alternative vehicle and fuel national codes and standards templates and to coordinate related domestic and international activities.

NREL's safety, codes, and standards efforts support several U.S. Department of Energy programs, including the Fuel Cell Technologies Program, the Vehicle Technologies Program, and the Clean Cities program. NREL also performs third-party safety reviews and codes and standards analyses for key public and private projects.
