Data Analysis

NREL's Regulatory Support team supports the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) and other requirements that accelerate the use of alternative fuels and vehicles and reduce our nation's dependence on imported petroleum.

Federal Agency Fleets

NREL helps agency fleets comply with EPAct's Federal Fleet Requirements and Executive Order 13149 by analyzing reporting data entered into the Federal Automotive Statistical Tool (FAST), compiling annual compliance "report cards," highlighting trends in reporting information, and helping agencies resolve data and compliance issues.

NREL's Regulatory Support team also performs detailed analysis on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) fleet, helps draft the DOE and federal agency annual reports, and provides guidance on how to improve petroleum reduction and assure data quality.

State and Alternative Fuel Provider Fleets

To support the EPAct State and Alternative Fuel Provider Rule, NREL developed web-based data management tools that make submitting compliance data easier for covered fleets. Available on the EPAct Web site, the password-protected reporting system allows fleets to submit their annual reports online using forms that automatically calculate compliance.

The Regulatory Support team also created a database interface to monitor and extract data on fleet compliance (such as annual reports, data summaries, and data trends). NREL is responsible for maintaining and upgrading the systems to ensure the integrity and security of the data.

In addition, NREL manages subcontracts with companies that assist fleets with reporting questions and procedures. When necessary, the subcontractors remind fleets to submit their reports.
