ReFUEL Chassis Dynamometer Operational

August 2004

Researchers in the Renewable Fuels and Lubricants (ReFUEL) Laboratory completed a major mechanical reworking of the chassis dynamometer and an upgrade to the power electronics for the DC-electric motor component of the dynamometer. The dynamometer is designed to allow a dual-axle truck or bus to be operated over a drive cycle that is displayed on a computer monitor mounted in front of the driver. The test range of the dynamometer is 10,000-80,000 lb, encompassing vehicle classes 3-8.

The chassis dynamometer upgrades have allowed researchers to install a new control system with many new features, the most prominent being electrical inertia simulation. The controls and data acquisition instrumentation for the chassis dynamometer have also been upgraded. To learn more about our chassis dynamometer capabilities visit our Chassis Dynamometer page.
