ReFUEL Lab Evaluates Hybrid Transit Buses

NREL's Renewable Fuels and Lubricants (ReFUEL) Laboratory continues to break new ground in heavy-duty chassis testing following its evaluation of the performance, emissions, and fuel economy of a production hybrid transit bus and a conventional baseline bus from the King County, Washington fleet. Both buses were powered with the same CAT C9 diesel engine. The hybrid system was developed by GM-Allison, a partner in this research.

The work includes several advanced elements, notably the use of a custom test cycle derived from in-use data gathered during fleet operation in addition to the standard drive cycles that were also performed. The research supports the development of advanced heavy-hybrid vehicles, advanced vehicle testing, and vehicle systems modeling and analysis while also contributing to advancement in heavy-duty chassis testing science by examining effects of grade and auxiliary air conditioning loads.
