Technology Integration

NREL supports several DOE initiatives that have been shaped by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) and other pieces of legislation and executive orders that are intended to accelerate the use of alternative fuels and other vehicle technologies that reduce our nation's use of petroleum.

EPAct requires certain fleets to purchase alternative fuel vehicles that can run on nonpetroleum fuels, including natural gas, electricity, ethanol, biodiesel, liquefied petroelum gas (propane), and hydrogen. We help DOE's administer these regulations by conducting analyses of technical and policy issues and industry trends, collecting and analyzing fleet vehicle and fuel data, and providing information to regulated fleets. Fleets governed by these regulations include federal and state government fleets, as well as alternative fuel providers.

We also provide technical assistance and other resources to communities and fleets across the nation working to implement alternative fuels through DOE's Clean Cities Program. This program supports public/private partnerships in more than 80 communities in the U.S. and several other countries. Efforts focus on helping overcome the technical barriers that inhibit the alternative fuels marketplace, and provide tools and resources to help fleets and policymakers make informed decisions.

The Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center (AFDC) provides comprehensive web-based information geared to educating the industry, fleet managers, and consumers about advanced fuels and vehicles. The AFDC features an extensive document database, a mapping system to find alternative fuel stations, a database of federal and state financial incentives and regulations, a vehicle buyer's guide, and other information.
