Research and Development
NREL's Nonpetroleum Based Fuels activity studies several technologies with the potential to displace imported petroleum and increase U.S. energy security. Our efforts include research in the following areas:
- Renewable Diesels, including biodiesel and E-diesel
- Gas-to-Liquid fuels such as Fischer-Tropsch fuel
- Gaseous Fuels, including natural gas and hydrogen
- Advanced Fuels, which focuses on understanding the ignition properties of fuels
To support our research, NREL has unique in-house Laboratory Capabilities that allow our researchers to study a variety of fuels, lubricants, and engines.
