Nonpetroleum Based Fuels

Laboratory Capabilities

NREL's Nonpetroleum Based Fuels work is supported by our in-house laboratories.

The Renewable Fuels and Lubricants Laboratory (ReFUEL) is a world-class research and testing facility dedicated to future fuels and advanced heavy-duty vehicle research. The ReFUEL lab features a chassis dynamometer for vehicle performance and emissions research and an engine dynamometer test cell capable of certification-quality emissions testing.

NREL's Fuels Chemistry Laboratory conducts fundamental research on fuels and supports the ReFUEL Engine Test Laboratory in its efforts to test and evaluate renewable and synthetic fuels and lubricants. The Fuels Chemistry Laboratory includes capabilities for measuring ignition properties of fuels and quantifying unregulated emissions from vehicle and engine testing.
