National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Nonpetroleum Based Fuels

About the Project

The Nonpetroleum Based Fuels and Lubricants (NPBF) activity is directed at overcoming technical barriers to expanded markets for liquid and gaseous fuels and lubricants that are renewable and biodegradable and that enable very high efficiency and very low emission engines. The work is specifically directed at meeting 21st Century Truck Program goals of increasing engine efficiency and displacing petroleum, and related objectives of DOE's Vehicle Technologies Program. NPBF focuses on projects in the following areas:

  • Renewable and Synthetic Fuels
  • Fuels for Advanced Combustion
  • Gaseous Fuels
  • Biodegradable Fuels and Lubricants
